Hamzi Moghrabi regresa a Palestina con su hija tras un exilio de cincuenta años. La Palestina que él conoció cuando era niño ya no existe, convertida en Israel desde hace mucho tiempo. Hamzi rememora la historia de su familia que no es otra que la historia de su propio pueblo desde su pertenencia al ya decadente Imperio Otomano, pasando por la Primera Guerra Mundial, el mandato británico, la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la creación del estado de Israel que supuso la guerra y el exilio de miles de palestinos. Dolorosamente, Hamzi va relatando a su hija la historia de su bisabuelo Mahmoud, de su padre Kamel, fieles a sus principios y siempre esperanzados de poder ver una Palestina libre e independiente, las dificultades que deben soportar a medida que pasan los años y la situación política se vuelve cada vez más compleja, hasta desembocar en el exilio, que los despoja de sus propiedades y de su patria. A través de los avatares de la familia Moghrabi podemos descubrir los dolorosos acontecimientos que conforman la dramática historia del pueblo palestino, en donde la intolerancia y el fanatismo parecen ser el hilo conductor de un conflicto de difícil solución.
